A down-filled jacket is one of those wardrobe staples definitely worth investing in. To ensure it retains its properties and pristine appearance for a long time, it needs proper care. Below, we explain how to wash a down jacket without damaging it.
How to wash down jackets?
Which women's jacket is best for extreme cold? The answer is simple – a down jacket is the best choice! Lightweight yet incredibly warm, it will provide comfort even on the coldest days and will last for years; you just need to care for it properly. It's not particularly complicated – you just need to remember a few rules about washing and drying it. Proper care will ensure your down jacket retains its unique properties and good looks. So, what about washing it? We'll answer! The key, of course, is to follow the manufacturer's recommendations, which you'll find on the inside label. These include information on both washing methods (hand or machine) and the appropriate temperature. Also, remember not to wash your down jacket too often. If it doesn't stain badly, simply freshen it up after the winter season and store it clean.

How to wash a down jacket in the washing machine?
First and foremost: separate! Don't mix your down jacket with other items, and if you have a model with a fur-trimmed hood, detach it. Before washing, make sure the pockets are empty. Then, turn the jacket inside out and close the zippers and snaps to prevent it from losing its shape. Set your washing machine to a program for down, delicate fabrics, or wool, and a maximum of 30-40 degrees Celsius. Also, the spin speed shouldn't be too high – 400-600 rpm at most. If you're wondering what to wash your down jacket with , the answer is – a special down detergent is best. Also, put some rubber balls with spikes or tennis balls in the drum to prevent the down from clumping and to distribute it evenly throughout the jacket.
ANSIN'S TIP: If you have time, soak your down jacket in lukewarm water and gently scrunch it before washing. This will remove any air from the jacket, reducing the risk of the down compacting during washing.
How to wash a down jacket by hand?
If the manufacturer recommends hand-washing your down jacket, start by soaking the jacket in lukewarm water with down detergent . A bathtub works best for this – if you don't have one, use a large bowl. Soak the jacket for about half an hour, then lightly knead the fabric. To remove any stains, use a soft sponge. Then replace the water with clean water and rinse the jacket in the same way. Finally, remove excess water by gently squeezing it out. It's important not to wring the jacket or use excessive force during the washing process. This will prevent the down from collecting in one place.
How to dry a down jacket?
The final step is drying. If you have a tumble dryer, you can place your down jacket in it provided the label shows a circle within a square. As with washing, set the temperature and spin speed as low as possible (max. 60 degrees Celsius) and spin speed (no higher than 600), and insert special balls or tennis balls inside. This is important to avoid deforming the down. If you're drying the jacket traditionally, after squeezing out the water, unzip it and lay it flat on the dryer. Don't place it next to a radiator and keep it out of direct sunlight. Turn the jacket over periodically (ideally 2-3 times a day). During this time, gently pat and tap it with your fingers to distribute the down. Hang the dry jacket on a hanger. If you're storing it away after the winter season, don't roll it up too tightly or stuff it in a compression bag. As you can see, caring for a down jacket isn't all that difficult!
