The spring and summer weather definitely encourages mountain hikes to admire the breathtaking views. When embarking on such a trip, it's crucial to be properly prepared. Mountain clothing is distinctly different from classic sportswear and varies depending on the season. Regardless of the weather, you should always be prepared for changing weather conditions. In this situation, dressing in layers is the best solution. Dressing for trekking can seem complicated for those just starting their hiking adventure, so we've decided to share a few practical tips on how to dress for a mountain trip, so you can easily put together the right outfit for your trip.
Clothing for the mountains - what criteria should it meet?
First, let's start with the features that mountain clothing should have:
- Comfort – Clothing worn in the mountains should allow for freedom of movement and be comfortable, so jeans and uncomfortable clothing have no place here. T-shirts and thin fleeces should be well-fitting to allow for heat to escape, which is especially important when climbing or approaching. Outer layers should be fitted so that thicker thermal layers can be worn underneath if necessary.
- Breathability – clothing made of breathable and thermally active materials is a must-have to prevent overheating or hypothermia. These materials effectively wick moisture away from the body, regulating its temperature.
- Protection – one of the roles of mountain hiking clothing is to protect against abrasions and adverse weather conditions, such as wind, rain, and snow. Therefore, such clothing should be strategically reinforced, and the material should provide thermal comfort and protect against wind and wetness.
Mountain clothing has several elements that do not change depending on the weather, and these are:
- Ankle hiking boots
They are the most important element of your outfit; poorly chosen shoes can effectively ruin your entire trip due to their lack of comfort. It's crucial that they extend above the ankle, protecting it from twisting. They also need a thick, traction sole to prevent slipping and absorb shock from walking on uneven surfaces. Good trekking shoes should be made of breathable and waterproof material. Shoes with a GORE-TEX or SYMPATEX membrane are ideal for this purpose. Before each hike, it's worth impregnating your shoes with a special spray that creates a waterproof coating. However, if you're going on a winter hike in the high mountains, you'll certainly benefit from shoes made of thicker material and with less breathability, which will make them waterproof. For summer hikes, classic trekking shoes with mesh elements, which provide greater air circulation, will be sufficient.
- Sports underwear
Close-fitting and comfortable underwear is the foundation of mountain attire. A sports bra or briefs shouldn't restrict your movement and make you feel comfortable. Our invisible tops also work perfectly for this purpose , acting like a second skin and acting as an additional layer of clothing, a so-called "warmer." But they're also useful in hot weather, as they absorb moisture well.
- High socks
Socks are also an important aspect of mountaineering attire. Above all, they shouldn't be ordinary socks we wear every day. Mountaineering socks should extend above the ankle to minimize the risk of abrasion from shoes. Additionally, to improve comfort, they should have reinforced areas under the toes, around the toes, heel, and ankle. The seams should be flat to prevent chafing while walking. Most importantly, they should be made of a breathable material, preferably wool, which has thermoregulating properties and doesn't absorb odors. If, for some reason, you don't want to or can't wear wool, cotton is also a good choice.
- Knitted scarf
Made of stretchy, natural knit fabric (cotton, viscose, modal, etc.), this tube-shaped scarf works not only as a neck warmer but also as a hat, face protection from cold air, or sweatband. It's a highly functional accessory that will come in handy any time of year.
How to dress for the mountains in spring?
During the transitional period, when it's warm one moment and then cold the next, rain and wind blow, you need to be prepared for all kinds of weather. When temperatures don't drop below 15 degrees Celsius, a light sweatshirt over your thermal underwear is sufficient . Sweatpants or hiking pants are sufficient for the bottom layer. However, when it's colder, wear thermal underwear over both top and bottom, along with a thick sweatshirt/fleece and sports pants. In both cases, a softshell jacket will work as an outer layer, protecting against light rain and wind.
What to wear in the mountains in spring and autumn? Don't forget a warm hat and a jacket/cape for heavier rain. In spring and autumn, especially in the lower elevations, where trails are often mountainous, gaiters are useful. These are waterproof leg warmers that attach to the shoelaces and soles of your shoes. They prevent water from seeping into your footwear and protect your legs from mud, which is often present on trails at this time.

How to dress in the mountains in summer?
High temperatures and sunny weather are certainly conducive to mountain hiking. Then, you don't have to worry about professional equipment or multiple layers of clothing. However, remember that the weather in the mountains changes very often , and blue skies can quickly turn into stormy, dark clouds. Therefore, in summer, it's worth wearing a sports T-shirt or top, a sweatshirt and a raincoat, and trekking pants with zip-off legs, or comfortable knit shorts and long sports pants to change into in case the weather changes. Sunglasses are also essential, as they will protect your eyes from harmful UV radiation. Protection from sunstroke is also important, so don't forget a hat.
How to dress in the mountains in winter?
Winter weather is particularly challenging, so when heading out on a winter mountain hike, we must ensure adequate protection from the cold to avoid overheating. What should you pack for a winter mountain trip? Thermal underwear is essential at this time of year, as it wicks sweat away from the skin and acts as a barrier against the cold. Merino wool underwear is ideal for this purpose. This material wicks moisture away from the skin and also has antibacterial properties. It's important that thermal underwear fits snugly to the body to perform its function. Wear a thin sweatshirt or fleece over your underwear (depending on the outside temperature).
For bottoms, insulated trekking trousers, such as softshell ones, are ideal. Don't forget a woolen hat. It's important that it's not too thick, as it can quickly overheat you. Also, remember to bring gloves, preferably waterproof and not too thick, so you can grip rocks, chains, or handrails in the mountains. Sunglasses may also be essential due to the sun's reflection on the snow.
Before planning a trek, always check a detailed weather forecast for the mountains, as conditions there are completely different than in the lowlands. It can also be helpful to check the conditions on a given day using camera views from different parts of the mountain. Thorough research will help you prepare for any eventuality and maintain thermal comfort in the event of a sudden change in weather. Remember, comfort and safety are the priority when dressing for the mountains!
We wish you many successful trips to the mountains with unforgettable views!
