How to dry clothes in a dryer?

The tumble dryer is a device that's becoming increasingly popular. It's no wonder – it eliminates the need to use a traditional upright dryer and store wet clothes in the living room or bedroom. We also don't have to waste time hanging them up. While a tumble dryer is a godsend for frequent laundry users, there's also the misconception that it damages and, above all, distorts the shape of clothes. Is this true? In fact, not every type of clothing is suitable for tumble drying. A special symbol on the inside label indicates whether a given item of clothing is suitable for tumble drying – a crossed-out circle within a square. As a general rule, tumble drying is not recommended:

  • bras
  • clothing with bead or sequin applications
  • Clothes made of 100% silk, wool, and cashmere should also be considered. Be wary if the majority of the label's composition is made up of these natural fibers.
  • You should also be careful when drying clothes made of viscose and cupro, as these two fibers are sometimes prone to shrinkage.

The last recommendation applies primarily to condenser dryers. Models with a built-in heat pump use cooler air for drying, making them much more suitable for clothes made from delicate fabrics. If you own a newer generation dryer, it's very likely that you can dry clothes made from these fibers using the appropriate delicate setting. However, if your dryer isn't one of these modern ones, be careful, as woolen clothes, for example, may shrink, and silk blouses may lose their elegant feel.

How to dry clothes in winter?

In autumn and winter, many of us complain that clothes don't dry as quickly as they do in summer. On rainy or frosty days, we can't put them out on the balcony either. In apartments with dry air, laundry dries quite quickly. However, if the humidity is high, it's worth using a few tricks to speed up drying time. First, whenever possible, wash smaller amounts of clothes. When the washing machine drum is crowded, clothes are spun less effectively, and therefore take longer to dry. To dry clothes quickly, it's also worth leaving larger spaces between clothes on the drying rack. This point is directly related to the previous one – the fewer clothes, the less problem there is with creating large spaces between them. Also, remember to air the room at least once while wet clothes are hanging on the drying rack.

ANSIN TIP: How to dry clothes quickly? It's worth adding one more tip to the above: double-spin your washing machine. Clothes will be significantly less damp after two spin cycles, allowing them to dry faster!

How to dry clothes so they don't stink?

Wet clothes sometimes start to smell musty. How can you prevent this? First and foremost, it's worth using fabric softeners or scented pearls. Another important thing is not leaving wet clothes in the washing machine drum. While a few minutes of delay in hanging clothes out won't hurt, an unpleasant odor will begin to develop after just a few hours. Some washing machine models have a special function that refreshes washed clothes through the drum's movements and steam. When buying a new machine, it's worth keeping this in mind, especially if you tend to forget about your washed clothes. It's best to place laundry on the balcony after it's been unloaded and hung on the dryer. However, if this isn't possible, remember to air the room frequently. In winter, heating will prevent the development of an unpleasant damp smell.

Proper drying of sweaters

Wool sweaters are one of those wardrobe items that require special care. Because wool absorbs water so strongly, hanging a freshly washed turtleneck or cardigan on the dryer could stretch it. Over-spinning, however, could cause the fibers to shrink. So how do you dry sweaters safely? If you're washing them in the washing machine, set the spin speed to no more than 200-400 rpm. After removing them from the drum, spread the sweaters out on towels and then roll them as if you were rolling a swiss roll. Use a little force to remove as much water as possible from the wool. Then, lay the sweaters out on a drying rack or on dry towels, ensuring they remain horizontal throughout the drying process. If you choose towels, turn the sweaters over periodically. If you decide to wash them by hand, be careful not to wring them out or wring them out too much. First, gently squeeze out the excess water, then use the towel method. These methods will help you enjoy your woolen clothes for a long time!
