Winter days are not only a challenge for our immunity, but also a great opportunity to open ourselves to new fashion solutions to ensure both thermal comfort and a satisfying look. In today's post, I'd like to explore the concept of layering and share ways to create stylish, warm, and layered outfits using the clothes you already have in your wardrobe.

What is layering?

Layering, also known as "dressing in layers," is a fashion technique that involves wearing several different layers of clothing that can be easily removed or added depending on changing temperatures . It's not only functional but also a great way to create unique styles.

What are the benefits of layering your clothes?

As mentioned above, layering clothes offers many additional benefits, beyond allowing you to flexibly adapt your outfit to the ambient temperature. Layering offers a wealth of opportunities for developing your style and exercising your creativity. You can combine different styles, cuts, colors, and textures, creating unique outfits from simple pieces from your wardrobe. Dressing in layers also allows for the possibility of playing with multi-dimensional outfits. A long coat revealing a cardigan, and peeking out collars and cuffs on shirts, add depth and interest to the outfit. Layering also helps shape your figure and create a more attractive look. Although layering is often associated with winter, its principles can be applied year-round . In spring and autumn, lightweight and breathable layers help adapt to changing temperatures. Similarly, on summer and cool evenings, we use layers to protect ourselves from the wind.

How many layers should you wear?

When searching for information on layering, you'll find suggestions for 3-4 layers, depending on the weather and your planned activities. The first, base layer stays closest to the body and is responsible for regulating temperature. The composition is crucial here, as it allows the skin to breathe. This layer consists of underwear, a T-shirt or bodysuit , leggings, tights, or socks. The base layer should fit as close to the body as possible so that the subsequent layers fit snugly. The next layer, the insulating layer , is responsible for retaining the heat generated. A sweater, shirt, turtleneck , or sweatshirt are ideal for this. Later, you can add another layer, such as a sweater, cardigan, or jacket, as needed. The final layer is the outer layer, which retains the heat generated and insulates it from the outside temperature. This layer includes all outerwear, such as jackets , coats, trench coats, capes, etc. Depending on your needs, it can be made of synthetics (if you want it to be waterproof, for example), but it is advisable to have a lining made of natural or artificial materials , such as viscose or acetate.

How to build a layered outfit?

I'll be quick to point out that these are the methods that work for me. You may have a completely different approach and build your layered style in your own way.

👉🏻 I start by choosing the right underwear that keeps me warm and wicks away moisture. Pieces from the Invisible collection work great for me because their color blends with my skin, they have a good composition, and they fit my body well. Depending on the pieces , I choose fitted tank tops, T-shirts, long sleeves, or bodysuits, which keep my back warm in winter and prevent layers from blowing up or "peeling" out of the bottom of my outfit. Instead of items from the Invisible collection, you can simply wear a T-shirt, a fitted long sleeve, or a thin, fitted turtleneck. You can wear thicker tights with a natural composition, thick socks, or even leggings underneath. I often wear thermal leggings under loose-fitting pants for walks, which provide plenty of warmth, and the loose fit of the leggings means the leggings aren't visible underneath.

👉🏻 Once you've created your thermal base, it's time to get creative. Try the following combinations:

  • thin turtleneck + thick turtleneck (tuck the thin turtleneck so it doesn't stick out from under the thick one)
  • thin turtleneck + sweatshirt (if you like a protruding turtleneck, I think a color that matches the sweatshirt or a shade of white will look great, as it will add shine to your face)
  • thin turtleneck + shirt (even better if you nonchalantly unbutton 3-4 buttons, revealing the turtleneck more)
  • longsleeve/T-shirt + sweatshirt (for a college style, you can leave the edge of the base layer slightly sticking out from under the sweatshirt; a combination of base colors, e.g. white and gray or navy blue, looks great)

I haven't mentioned the classic blouse/T-shirt/turtleneck combo with a cardigan, jacket, or blazer. You can add thickness to your outfit with layers that hide under each other , for example, a tank top + a thin turtleneck + a thick turtleneck.

Some tips on what to pay attention to?

👉🏻 Play with contrasting colors and textures to create an interesting visual effect. You can create monochromatic combinations using different textures , such as croco, smooth leather and knit, or ribbed, denim and leather. Such combinations add dynamism to the look.

👉🏻 Play with different lengths of clothing, for example, pair a short jacket with a midi skirt and a longer coat. Varying lengths will add dimension to the outfit, making it more interesting. However, avoid making the outer layer shorter than the inner layers—this usually doesn't look aesthetically pleasing. The outer layer should envelop and envelop the entire piece.

👉🏻 Experiment with cuts – loose and tight pieces can work beautifully together. Pair skinny jeans with a shirt, a thin V-neck sweater, and an oversized blazer. This style will visually elongate your upper body, which you can balance with boots with chunky soles.

👉🏻 Avoid over-combining bright colors. Instead, opt for neutral, base colors, enriched with one or two contrasting colors that complement each other.

👉🏻 Use a pattern, for example, on one of your accessories or clothes. The pattern will add energy to the outfit because it won't be so static. Just remember not to overdo it with the number of colors you layer on the clothes and the ones in the pattern. If you have one larger patterned element, another element can be related to the pattern in color, while the rest should be kept in the basic palette. This will make the outfit colorful but still aesthetically pleasing.

👉🏻 Don't forget about accessories like jewelry, a scarf, a hat, gloves, a handbag, and shoes. They can be solid colors, from a single color palette, or completely contrasting if the rest of your outfit is subdued.

Layering your outfit is a matter of individual preference and a way to express your style, even in more challenging weather conditions. I encourage you to experiment with different combinations to unleash the potential of your wardrobe – perhaps you'll rediscover the power of the clothes you already own.
