Each of us wants to know which colors and styles of clothing will accentuate our figure's assets while simultaneously concealing what might not be our strongest points. In practice, this isn't easy, as our varying curves make each figure unique in its own way . But is it possible to gather the specific characteristics of our figure and, based on that, determine what type of clothing will suit us? Theoretically, we can find such categories, but in practice, they don't necessarily provide ready-made solutions. But more on that in today's post.

The eternal dilemma… what type of figure do I have?

To answer this question, the most important thing is to observe your body and recognize its strengths. This process is primarily intended to help you when shopping and building your wardrobe by finding clothes that will enhance your figure's proportions and highlight its strengths. The simplest classification identifies five body types :

  • pear - characterized by narrower shoulders, wider hips and thighs
  • a cone - a silhouette that has wider shoulders or bust than hips
  • hourglass - a silhouette with even proportions and a defined waist
  • apple - a body type with slim legs and a less defined waist
  • model - a slim figure with smaller breasts, hips and buttocks

From the outset, the concept of dividing female silhouettes was intended to make dressing easier and offer women specific solutions that would highlight their strengths and improve their proportions. In practice, however, they sometimes lead to more confusion. Why? Read on to find out the answer.

When did body types become most popular?

Body type categorization became even more popular thanks to two British presenters and stylists: Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine . Their famous programs brought them immense popularity and helped many women refine their wardrobes. Following the show's popularity, further body type categorizations were developed by other stylists, categorizing women into different body types.

Why don't BODY TYPES work in practice?

This is because, despite being assigned a specific body type, such as "pear," each of us has individual characteristics such as height, waistline, leg length relative to torso, arm length, chin shape, leg shape, and many other features that make us unique in our own way. The most important counterargument to body types is that the difference between shoulders and hips can be significant for one person, while in others it can be minor. If my body proportions differ slightly, we shouldn't worry about it, as it's more important to wear a beautiful dress than to sacrifice it for slightly larger hips (which, by the way, can be an asset!). Furthermore, a crucial factor is that today's clothes are made "ready to wear." Therefore, they are made to a certain average body template, and as we know, in practice, many of us deviate from this template due to our different heights and individual shapes. So, in this case, are body types completely useless and becoming a thing of the past? No, they aren't, and they make sense; we just need to learn how to use them properly.

Should each of us strive for an hourglass figure?

Scientific research shows that when something is proportionate, our eyes perceive it as more attractive. Therefore, choosing the right clothes for your body type means choosing the right styles, colors, and patterns so that you don't add bulk to the areas you want to conceal, but rather accentuate the areas you want to highlight. And this doesn't require much philosophy to learn. For example , if you have wide hips , wearing loose white pants and a fitted black blouse will naturally make your hips appear even wider. If you have a less defined waist, a small bust, and a small butt, looser clothes that add femininity are better, like a flowing dress cinched in with a medium-width belt. If you have a larger bust that you don't like to emphasize, you'll look much better in a blouse with a lower neckline that exposes the neck and collarbones, such as a V-neck, than a high-neck turtleneck, which will visually add weight to this area.

This also works the other way around. For example, if you have slim legs but a larger stomach, you can boldly accentuate your legs with light-colored pants, a shorter skirt, or patterns, and "create" a waist with a fitted blazer or biker jacket. If you have wide hips but a cinched waist, you can confidently wear palazzo pants or culottes, as long as their high waistline accentuates your beautifully defined waist.

Why do body types cause more confusion for some women?

In practice, we women often force ourselves to see ourselves as having certain body types. Broader shoulders don't necessarily mean we're textbook " tapered " figures! Not every deviation from the body shape standard requires correction, please remember that! We can only qualify as a certain body type when our disproportion is truly visible. In this situation, these body types can test out specific clothing tips and tricks and then assess how they work for them. As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, other factors will also influence whether a particular outfit looks good on you. Remember that sometimes it's worth taking a less critical look at yourself – many of our seemingly weak points can turn out to be strengths and assets others can dream of. This often happens with chunky thighs, which for others are definitely a highlight worth emphasizing daily. Therefore, trust your honest analysis and your own eye in all this. You can also seek advice from an expert, who will surely find the best solutions with a personalized approach to your body type. Every stylist knows perfectly well that when creating a style, we rely primarily on aesthetic sense, not on formulas. Body types are meant to be inspiration and guidance, not a ready-made formula.
