In winter, we pull wool sweaters, hats, and scarves from the bottom of our wardrobes. To ensure they last as long as possible, they need proper care. Properly washing wool isn't everything, though—the way we store our clothes and accessories is equally important. So how can we enjoy our woolen garments for many seasons to come?

How to wash wool?

Following the instructions for washing wool is crucial, as failing to do so can ruin your favorite cashmere sweater or scarf . High temperatures shrink the fibers, and intense spinning can distort the garment's shape. To avoid this , woolen garments should be washed separately – by hand or on a special washing machine program that provides optimal settings (low temperature and spinning below 400 rpm, or no spinning at all). It's also worth remembering that wool doesn't require frequent washing. While a cotton T-shirt will become stale after one or two wears, a wool sweater can be easily aired (preferably in the cold) to eliminate unpleasant odors. It also won't stain easily – this is because the fibers don't absorb water very well.

What to wash wool in?

Wool requires special treatment at every stage of the cleaning process. This also applies to choosing a laundry detergent. It's worth using detergents specifically designed for delicate fibers. These are effective for merino wool , cashmere , and silk. What sets them apart? Primarily, they are effective at low temperatures. They also have a different pH, which helps woolen garments retain their properties and maintain their beautiful appearance. Don't overdo it with the amount of detergent added – it's best to follow the instructions on the packaging. If your washing machine doesn't have a wool program or you don't trust it, hand wash woolen garments. Remember to wash in cool water and avoid rubbing or stretching. Gently knead sweaters and hats, then rinse them in clean water at the same temperature. It's worth doing this at least twice to completely remove any detergent residue from the fibers.

How to care for wool after washing?

Regardless of whether you choose machine or hand washing, don't wring or squeeze a wet sweater. Instead, squeeze it out of the water – preferably through a clean, dry towel, rolling it as if you were making a jelly roll. This is definitely the best method! Lay the garment flat to dry – you can lay it on a clothesline or a dry towel. If you choose towels, turn it over occasionally – this will help it dry faster. Also, remember to place it away from a radiator and out of direct sunlight. When storing clean woolen clothes in the closet, choose appropriate hangers. They should have wide shoulders to prevent stretching. Thicker, heavier sweaters or dresses are best placed on a shelf to avoid the risk of warping the fibers.

How to care for wool? Simple ways

A natural consequence of woolen clothing is that its fibers will pill. You may notice small pills on the surface of the garment. To remove these, simply use a sweater shaver. Never use regular razors – they can cut the delicate fabric! If you have a wool coat in your wardrobe, brush it occasionally with a special brush. If it gets dirty, take it to a dry cleaner instead of hand washing it. Do the same with a wool suit. You can also use a steamer to refresh a wool coat. The hot steam helps eliminate unpleasant odors and restores the fibers' shine.
