Although fashion is becoming increasingly more embracing of women's shapes, and we're increasingly choosing styles based solely on whether the style suits our figure, I'm still asked what clothes are best for short women, whether women with large breasts should..., whether it's still possible at age X... The barriers we impose on ourselves don't make it easier for us to express ourselves through style. Of course, while we should stick to dress codes in formal settings, in private we can experiment with subtle fashion variations. Clothes are for us, not we for clothes 💛
Today, I'd like to tackle a very feminine wardrobe staple: dresses 👗 and answer the question: what type of dress is best for short women? This topic is close to my heart because I'm not exactly tall myself 😅 Personally, I believe fashion allows us to achieve so much; we just need to find the right one! I invite you to read on.
What type of dress for short women?
Even if you're short, you still have plenty of options for creating unique styles – with the help of a good tailor, you can tailor clothes to your figure as if they were made specifically for you! By purchasing timeless, high-quality clothing, I guarantee that a tailor's service will be a long-lasting investment.
Another option is clothing stores offering petite clothing, meaning clothes tailored to petite figures—those with shorter heights and smaller body measurements. Fortunately, more and more brands are recognizing the need to create clothing aimed at petite consumers. You can find petite clothing at multibrand stores like Zalando, Answear, and Modivo.
While dresses and bottoms are hard to find in clothing brands that don't specialize in petite clothing, you can find basics at brands for all body types , such as ANSIN, where a variety of timeless cuts will allow you to choose clothes tailored to your taste and shape. Basic clothing can be styled in many ways, for example, by tucking the bottom of a blouse into your pants, either in its entirety or just in the front, or by pairing a simple base with a scarf or statement jewelry and a striking bottom – your height won't matter. So, you can see how you'll feel in basic dresses !
What dress length for short women?
We've discussed where to look, so now let's answer the question: WHAT TO LOOK FOR?
First up, let's take a look at maxi dresses, which still create a divide among petite women. A dress for a shorter woman can reach the ankle, which, paradoxically, can even slim and elongate her figure. However, it's best to avoid dresses with a pronounced waistline or two-tone designs. Vivid color cutouts can shorten your figure. Single-color dresses are a great choice—a monochromatic combination visually elongates the figure. If you have a defined waist, you can accentuate it with a belt in a color similar to the dress (again, avoid striking color differences). Long dresses with a slit at the bottom also work well. A slit will give the dress a looser silhouette while also showcasing your legs and adding a few inches.

Of course, the cut of the dress alone doesn't guarantee success – remember to include "enhancing factors" like a belt with an interesting buckle or high heels . Even a delicate, comfortable heel – a duckbill or a block heel – will elongate and straighten your figure.
Another length that shorter women often hesitate to choose is the midi length. Depending on the cut of the dress, this length can either weigh down the figure or accentuate feminine curves. For women with an hourglass or pear figure , a fitted midi dress will accentuate the hips , creating a very feminine look. Loose, trapezoidal midi dresses, on the other hand, can detract from the silhouette and add heaviness. For figures with a less defined waist or a proportionally larger top, A-line dresses can work well. They add volume to the lower body, balancing out proportions. Flared dresses also conceal imperfections around the hips.
Mini is the last length I'll be looking at. Theoretically, this length works for both tall and short women. However, it's important to maintain proportions. For some, it will be just 3-4 centimeters above the knee, while for others, a dress that ends 10-12 cm above the knee will look best. Mini dresses work well for shorter figures because they accentuate the legs, reducing the overall weight. There's no hard and fast rule when it comes to cuts – the sure solution is to try them on and be open to new styles.

What should short women avoid when buying dresses?
Below is a list of a few points to pay attention to when choosing a dress model for yourself:
- lowered hip line (such styles can disturb the proportions of your figure, lengthening the torso and shortening the legs);
- large color contrasts of the top and bottom of the dress (contrasting cuts around the waist will optically shorten your figure);
- massive patterns (large patterns can weigh down your figure);
- massive decorations , e.g. ruffles (can optically reduce and overwhelm the silhouette);
- dresses that end just below the knees (such models shorten the calves, making the lower part of the silhouette appear short and heavy, and the upper part unnaturally enlarged);
- very loose cuts (too much oversize will make you "get lost" in the dress, making you look like you're wearing the wrong size);
- tight, low-cut cuts at the mini length (exposing too much skin at once can make the styling look vulgar - in the case of the mini length, it is better to avoid a low-cut back or a very deep neckline).
Choosing dresses for short women can seem like a challenge. This post and fashion trends are just guidelines; the most important thing is that you feel confident and comfortable in your own skin. The key to successful styling is experimenting with styles you haven't tried before, observing short style icons, and going shopping with a friend or a personal stylist who will look at you objectively.
