For a trained eye (and hand), distinguishing linen from cotton or silk certainly won't be a problem. Determining which material is woven and which is knit can be a much more difficult task . Most of us are familiar with these two words, but not everyone can explain what they mean exactly. So, how does knitwear differ from fabric in appearance, feel, and production? You'll learn in the text below!
Knitwear and fabric, or the division of materials
The starting point for a detailed discussion of knits and fabrics is material . This ambiguous word describes the raw material from which various products are made – not just clothes. In everyday language, we often refer to fabrics as "material," but fabric is one of the two basic types of material used in the clothing industry. The latter is knitwear. They differ primarily in their structure , which influences the properties (e.g., elasticity) and, consequently, the intended use of the material. Their care also differs – knitwear requires much more careful handling to avoid damaging its delicate structure. The differences between knitwear and woven fabrics are noticeable at first glance and to the touch. So, let's move on to the details!
Fabric and knitwear – how are they made?
Let's start with the basics, namely the method of weaving knits and fabrics. Knitwear is made from a single yarn, forming so-called loops. Fabric, on the other hand, is made from two types of threads (weft and warp), which are interwoven in a crisscross pattern. Their perpendicular arrangement makes the fabric less stretchy and more rigid to the touch. The loops characteristic of knitwear make it a resilient, soft, and more breathable material.
There are three types of fabric weaves:
- plain weave – the result of its use is batiste, chiffon or flannel
- twill weave , best known in the form of classic jeans
- satin weave , used to obtain shiny satin fabrics
Various weaves are also used in knitting, the process of producing knitwear. The so-called weft weave allows for the creation of sweater, rib, and jersey fabrics. There's also the warp weave, which is used in the production of tulle and tricot, materials used for skirts and swimsuits.

Knitwear and fabrics – examples and applications
Although we usually think of wool when we talk about knitwear, knitwear isn't made exclusively from this fiber. Cotton knitwear, for example, is becoming increasingly popular, characterized by its exceptional softness and elasticity. The distinct properties of these two types of materials influence their use in the clothing industry. Knitwear is typically used to make sweaters, scarves, gloves, hats, as well as dresses, sweatshirts, and sweatpants. You'll feel very comfortable in knitwear – its weave ensures that the garments fit your body shape perfectly and won't restrict your movement in any way . At this point, you're probably already guessing what types of clothing are made from the fabric. These include elegant shirts and jeans, items characterized by significantly greater stiffness.
We can tell you that we're currently working on the first shirt in our assortment . One thing's for sure – fabrics will be available at ANSIN soon! A wide selection of new items is on the way.
Different ways to care for fabrics and knitwear
Clothes made of woven fabrics have low elasticity and are more susceptible to creasing, so you should iron them regularly. Knitwear often doesn't require ironing, but you do need to pay more attention when washing it . This is because knitwear is less resistant to stretching – so don't spin it too hard or press it by hand, as its unique weave could become irreversibly deformed in some areas . Woolen knits require a gentle wash on a special cycle in the washing machine or hand wash, and then dry horizontally. Most fabrics can be washed, tumble dried, and hung to dry, but there are exceptions. So remember to always check the care instructions on the inside label after purchasing a new item. Following the manufacturer's recommendations will ensure your clothes retain their good looks for a long time.

What is the difference between knitwear and woven fabric and which is better?
Both woven and knit fabrics offer many advantages, so it's impossible to answer this question definitively . The distinct properties of these materials mean they can be used in different situations . Knit fabric is great for everyday wear – whether as a fitted dress, a comfortable pair of sweatpants, or a warm, chunky sweater. Knit fabric is also useful as outerwear , such as a trench coat or a sports jacket that will protect you from the wind. Knitwear will be softer to the touch and provide comfort, while clothes made from fabric will be more resistant to deformation and guarantee a flawless appearance. That's why it's worth having each of these materials in your wardrobe. We're especially excited that the upcoming fabric season at ANSIN promises to be truly diverse...
