May and June are traditionally First Communion season in Poland. Both First Communions and baptisms have slightly different dress codes than weddings. Why? This is because this type of celebration is combined with a wedding, which is considered a less formal occasion due to its party-like nature.
What should you pay attention to when choosing clothes for religious ceremonies?
- The right style for First Communion and Baptism
Occasions such as First Holy Communion and baptism require a dress code, such as covered shoulders, a not-too-low neckline, and appropriately length skirts/dresses (preferably knee-length). Women's suits, elegant jumpsuits, pencil and flared skirts, and dresses with elegant constructions, such as slightly more flowing ones, are ideal for this occasion.

- Outerwear
The jacket or coat we choose should complement the dress or skirt in both cut and color. Tailored jackets typically complement elegant dresses. A classic beige trench coat, on the other hand, will complement most outfits, not just formal ones.
A common mistake when choosing an outerwear piece for a dress or jumpsuit is to choose a black or white jacket, regardless of the base color. Unfortunately, this isn't always a good combination, as it's best to choose the colors of the outerwear individually. A stylish combination is to pair the base and jacket in two shades of the same color, or to combine two shades of the same color, creating a so-called total look that looks very elegant.
- Colors of styling for Communion or Baptism
Subdued, bright, and not-too-saturated colors are best for these occasions, as they look best in photos and guarantee that your appearance won't distract from the child receiving the sacrament. Black is also not recommended for this type of event, as black is typically an evening color and, moreover, carries mourning connotations in our culture.
So which colors will be best? See:
- white,
- without,
- light pink,
- light blue,
- pistachio,
- light gray,
- lilac,
- creamy.
- Patterns
Patterns should also be kept to a muted color palette. Mixing prints for this occasion wouldn't be the best idea—it's better to keep them to just one place. From what I've seen, I can recommend floral patterns for this occasion, which perfectly complement the spring atmosphere .

- Extras
Since First Holy Communion and baptism are formal occasions , we should choose closed-toe shoes. The best footwear for this occasion is pumps or stilettos (max. 8 cm) that match the overall color of the outfit. This means you can also choose a slightly bolder color. Similarly, a handbag should coordinate with the other items of clothing. Don't forget jewelry, which always adds a touch of chic and elegance. A scarf tied around the neck or woven into the hair can be an interesting accessory, perfectly complementing the outfit.
Let's remember that our clothing expresses respect for others, so during these types of occasions, we should also pay special attention to the message we want to convey through our appearance.
