When we see the word "satin" on a label, we almost automatically think of silk. However, it often turns out that our expectations were too high, and the manufacturer simply states that it's "artificial silk." What does this actually mean, and what materials might be covered by this term? In today's article, we'll try to explain!

What is artificial silk?

It's actually not a single material, but a group of materials produced by chemically processing wood cellulose. Depending on the production method, we can distinguish several types of rayon: collodion, copper, acetate, or viscose. The latter is most often found on store shelves.

This material can be distinguished from natural silk thanks to the so-called "fire test." Silk obtained from silkworms is known for being very difficult to burn, and during the burning process, it releases a characteristic smell of burning hair. Artificial silk will catch fire very quickly and burn until completely consumed.

Artificial silk - advantages and disadvantages

Artificial silk owes its popularity primarily to its price. Its production is significantly less expensive than natural silk, which is why many stores choose to stock collections made from this material. Furthermore, it has properties very similar to real silk – it is pleasant to the touch and drapes beautifully. Furthermore, it is much easier to care for – it can be washed and ironed at slightly higher temperatures than natural silk.

Many people wonder if artificial silk is breathable. We want to dispel your doubts and answer: artificial silk, made from cellulose fibers, is very breathable and, moreover, hygroscopic!

A major drawback of rayon, especially viscose, is the need to enhance its durability with admixtures of materials such as polyester or polyamide. There's also the issue of wrinkling, as after several hours of wear, any creases that develop during use become more visible.

Another thing worth noting is the misinformation surrounding silk. Often, the terms "satin" or "rayon" cover not only viscose, cupro, or lyocell, but also polyester. This material has completely different properties and, despite its relatively affordable price, carries many drawbacks. It is not hygroscopic, meaning it does not absorb water and is not very breathable. As a result, you can easily sweat in polyester, and the material does not wick away sweat. In people with skin conditions or allergies, this can exacerbate inflammation.

Artificial silk - use

Where is this material most often found? In scarves, ties, shirts, and dresses, for example. It excels in these products due to its high durability and breathability. For this reason, we'll also see more rayon products in stores during the summer.

Recently, it has also been increasingly used to produce pillowcases, eye masks and hair accessories - fabric bands and caps.
