Not all wool is created equal. Among the various types, merino wool undoubtedly deserves special attention. What makes its fibers so unique, and why is it worth having merino wool clothing in your wardrobe? You'll find the answers to these questions below!

Merino wool – what is this material?

Merino wool is obtained from the fleece (a dense mass of fibers) of merino sheep. This species of sheep is characterized by an extraordinary ability to adapt to various, often extreme, weather conditions – temperature fluctuations from -30 to as much as 40 degrees Celsius, as well as very strong winds. Their fleece provides them with this extraordinary ability. This is all thanks to its density, as well as the thickness of individual fibers – it is three times thinner than a human hair, and its structure is reminiscent of spiderweb threads. Air-filled spaces exist between the individual fibers, providing insulation from both high and low temperatures. These exceptional properties are maintained during clothing production, resulting in finished merino wool products such as sweaters and underwear.

Is merino wool antibacterial?

Merino wool doesn't attract dust or any airborne microbes. Furthermore, the lanolin coating its fibers inhibits the growth of dust mites, fungi, and bacteria. These properties make merino wool an antibacterial material. Its resistance to electrostatic charges also makes merino clothing easier to keep clean. This characteristic is due, among other things, to the fibers' hydrophobicity, or their ability to repel water molecules. Note that if you spill any liquid on a wool sweater, it won't absorb immediately. If you react quickly, a stain won't form at all, because the fibers' hydrophobicity slows down the absorption of dirt. Merino wool's ability to wick away moisture also prevents unpleasant odors . When merino wool stays dry, bacteria don't have a favorable environment to thrive, keeping your clothing fresh. Merino sweaters don't need to be washed frequently—a good airing is usually enough. However, if washing is necessary, remember to follow a few important rules.

Merino wool and its thermoregulating properties

Merino wool, like no other, maintains optimal body temperature . This is possible thanks to the spaces between its fibers, which dissipate heat and insulate against the cold. This is why merino underwear and sportswear are so popular with physically active people – even if the body heats up during exercise, moisture won't be trapped between the fibers, but will instead be filtered and released into the environment. The structure of merino fibers is also responsible for its breathability. We colloquially say that merino wool "breathes," and it allows our skin to do the same. This valuable ability to constantly exchange air is crucial to preventing overheating. That's why, even when winter is over, don't hide your merino sweater in the back of the closet. Thanks to its properties, merino clothing isn't just reserved for frosty days !

Merino wool – why else do we love it?

When writing about merino wool, it's impossible not to mention its extraordinary softness . Regular sheep's wool can be rough, heavy, and unpleasant to the touch. It often causes a scratchy sensation or even irritation, due to its thick and hard fibers. Merino wool, on the other hand, is light and flexible , making it soft and very pleasant to the touch, and it doesn't scratch. The elasticity of merino fibers also means that clothing made from it doesn't stretch and doesn't require ironing. It's no wonder so many items are made from merino wool: thermal underwear, socks, undershirts, hats, scarves, gloves, and, of course, sweaters. You'll find the latter in our offer too! A thin, black merino turtleneck sweater works well as the only top piece in your wardrobe, or as a base layer under a blazer or denim jacket. We're confident that when you put on a merino sweater, you'll fall in love with the incredible comfort it provides. So, will you be tempted? :)
